Can you give me some guidance?

Hi Yuri,

My name is Miusam Mohamed from the Maldives. I have been doing photography for about four years in Maldives. It was great to know that you were in Maldives.

I have a favour to ask, if its not too much, I would like to request if you could help me out in someway by giving me some advice to establish as a photographer. Maldives is a very small market, I dont have any equipment, I get to borrow from freinds sometime, mostly a nikon D300 with an 18-55mm lens and a sb-800 flash. I would like to start getting into selling images with a stock agency but I'm unsure as to what equipment would be needed to start. Do you think images of Maldives would sell well?
Also are there any places where I could get grants or loans for photography equipment?

I have a very strong passion for photography, which is why I want to pursue a career in this field and stand up on my own feet by doing what I love, which is creating images that would evoke peoples minds with everlasting moments that would carry through the history in time.

I wish you all the best, with a successful career ahead, just keep on shooting those awesome pictures.

I hope to hear from you. :)

Best Regards

Miusam

Hi Miusam.
Thank you for your question. It's always nice to hear from passionate photographers.
I would say that it is actually not photography gear that you need. It's not about the equipment. It's about the subject matter and the way you shoot. There are plenty of great locations in the Maldives, so if you just pay attention and possess a great deal of patience, you will be able to do just great. In the Maldives, you do not need models. You just need a point and shoot camera and a lot of patience. Keep in mind that the images from the Maldives that are in high demand are images displaying luxurious resorts and exotic travel
destinations. If you can capture these concepts, you will definitely be creating sellable images.
Be aware, however, that a lot of people are shooting this kind of content. It's a very competitive field.
Don't go spend your time and money on gear. You need to do research, shoot planning and go out shooting with the purpose of creating images that will sell. Not just beautiful images. Sellable images.

I'm sorry but I don't know of any place which specialize in grants or loans to photographers. But it's not gear you need. :)

Wish you all the best.

I think the answer Yuri is very inspiring. I'm in the same situation, but of course in Portugal. Already have an account on iStockPhoto and have had a sale for a few months, but has not sold more. I have to review my portfolio.

    Good luck Mohamed Miusam
