When it comes to using photographic material in print media, choosing an image with a high resolution is of the utmost importance. Luckily, you are in exactly the right place to find high quality, high resolution images, in a wide variety of styles and covering a multitude of concepts. Our photographers (and especially Yuri Arcurs himself) are almost obsessive about their quest to capture images of the highest quality and clarity, and when it comes to equipment, only the best will do. In fact, PeopleImages.com offers full pages print sizes at 300dpi, with an average resolution of 32mp – more than three times the resolution most other sites offer!

But what exactly does ‘high resolution’ refer to, why is it important and what is it going to cost you? Let’s take a quick look…

Image resolution - dpi and pixel dimensions:

Real-life resolution

An image’s resolution refers to the pixel density of the image. The higher the density is, the clearer and sharper the picture will be. Image resolution is referred to in two ways: dpi/ppi and the pixel dimensions. Dots-per-inch (dpi), or pixels-per-inch (ppi), refers to the print resolution. For example, when we refer to 300dpi, it means that when you print the picture, there will be 300 dots per inch. Resolution is also referred to in terms of the pixel dimensions of the image itself, in other words, how many pixels the image is made up of. For instance, if the pixel dimensions are 4958 x 4987, that means that 4958 pixels make up our image from left to right, and 4987 from top to bottom. These days, anything over 1024 x 768 is considered high resolution. If your image resolution is not high enough, it will result in a pixelated or unclear image with jagged edges, so always be sure to check these dimensions when choosing which file size to download. When downloading from PeopleImages, however, you can rest assured. Our image resolution starts at 16mp, with an average of 32mp, so with our images, you can always be assured of crystal clarity!

Print vs display resolution:

Checking the resolution

Sometimes you will find an image on the internet that looks great on-screen, but when you print it you are left staring at a pixelated mess. This is because computer displays are relatively low-resolution devices, whereas printers are high resolution. An image at 72dpi will look great on a website (and is in fact the standard for online use), but might not give the best results in print format. Sometimes, the file simply does not have enough information to successfully translate the image into a clear printed version. However, if you only need an image for online use, sticking to 72 dpi will ensure a quick download speed and smaller file sizes.

Downloading options:

PeopleImages offers various download sizes of our images, so whether you simply need an image for a website, or you need it for publication in a glossy magazine, there is something to suit every need and pocket. These include extra small and small sizes at 72dpi (perfect for websites/ blogs) and medium to ''fullres'' sizes at 300dpi (for printing purposes), as well as a special option that allows you to request a custom size image. The 'custom' feature allows you to not only specify your own width and height, but also the dpi (in inches or centimeters).
